Who We Are
The Great Train Race is a thrilling event that celebrates historical modes of transport against South Africa’s colourful backdrop. It has been running since 2016 and features vintage cars, motorcycles, and steam trains in a distinctly nostalgic yet very exciting way. Our goal is to uphold the history of early automotive and railway innovations and provide a unique, learning experience for enthusiasts and the general public. Each year, people both participating and attending come dressed in period attire to relive some of the old magic, almost turning this event into living history. Our vision was to deepen appreciation toward these mechanical marvels so they would continue sharing their stories to inspire future generations. The Great Train Race remains the bridge between past and present, marrying education with entertainment in homage to ingenuity and a sense of adventure that had driven transportation evolution.
Some History
The Great Train Race draws inspiration from the legendary 1930 race between Woolf Barnato’s Bentley and the Le Train Bleu, which has become symbolic of speed, innovation, and adventure. This iconic Monte Carlo-to-Calais race was spurred on by a wager Barnato made: that his Bentley would outrun the luxurious Le Train Bleu to Calais, even though the train was reputed to be the fastest on the continent at the time. Barnato’s victory not only proved the performance and prestige of Bentley engineering, it cemented the story as one of the most legendary moments in motoring history. The Great Train Race, founded in 2016 in South Africa, is a theatrical re-enactment of that legendary showdown. While not a race in the traditional sense, it is a tribute to the spirit and excitement of the original Bentley vs. Le Train Bleu challenge — an immersive blend of vintage cars and steam trains that celebrates engineering brilliance and the thrill of timeless motion.
