About The Great Train Race

Relive the Golden Age of Travel with Vintage Cars, Motorcycles, Airplanes and Steam Trains

The Great Train Race is a unique and exhilarating celebration of vintage travel, combining the romance of steam trains with the charm of early 20th-century automobiles. Founded by Christopher Van in 2016, this event series was inspired by the historic race between a Bentley and Le Train Bleu in 1930. Our mission is to preserve and celebrate the heritage of vintage automobiles, aircraft, and steam locomotives while promoting tourism and cultural appreciation in South Africa. Each event in our series offers participants and spectators a chance to step back in time, experiencing the excitement and nostalgia of a bygone era.

At The Great Train Race, we pride ourselves on creating unforgettable experiences for the whole family. From the thrilling sight of a Rovos Rail steam train racing alongside a cavalcade of vintage cars and motorcycles to the breathtaking aerial displays of buzzing biplanes and vintage aircraft, every moment is designed to captivate and inspire. Our events – in a salute to the past – are vibrant cultural festivals complete with period costumes, live music, and a basket of food and retro merchandise stalls. Whether you’re a vintage vehicle enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a unique day out, The Great Train Race promises an adventure like no other. Join us as we celebrate the past and create lasting memories for the future.
