Heidelberg
The Great Train Race
Get a dose of nostalgia for bygone transport at Heidelberg’s Great Train Race, where a gracious Rovos Rail steam train will pull into town accompanied by a parade of veteran cars and motorcycles that date back as far as the early 1900s. Above, buzzing biplanes will add to the spectacle. But that alone is not all the action—continue it at Heidelberg Airfield with static displays of vintage aircraft accompanied by a selection of food types, live music, and entertainment for the whole family, which includes miniature steam train rides and helicopter flips. Dress up in era style and have a day full of history, adventure, and that community spirit. Get your tickets now for this nostalgic ride back to another era.

The Authentic Train Race Experience
A mere nine miles (fifteen kilometres) from the Heidelberg Station, relive the original 1930 train race experience by driving for half a mile alongside the Rovos Rail steam train. Not a race at all, but trundling with the train on the gravel road alongside the railway line.
Perfect for prewar cars and motorcycles because they will be in their natural habitat. Postwar vehicles welcome too (up to 1980 – the cutoff date for The Great Train Race). This graded road would have been considered “good” in the 1930s but by today’s standards is crude and bumpy. If it has not recently rained, a water tanker will be deployed on the morning of the Authentic Train Race Experience to ameliorate dust.

Starting off at the classic venue of Elgin Railway Station, this event has some very fine examples of gleaming vintage cars, motorcycles, and two glorious steam locomotives. The runners, clad in full vintage regalia, sprint up the scenic courses on top of Sir Lowry’s Pass and Somerset West and converge for a finish at the Stellenbosch Flying Club. Enjoy the view of classy vehicles draped under national flags; luxury tents with the Cape’s finest wines, a Classic Air Display, and a number of high-end merchandise stalls while being serenaded by live jazz music.
